Amazon.com
The four glitziest ladies ever to hit Manhattan as a single force--Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte--are back, fabulous as ever, in Sex and the City 2. They may be older, and even a little wiser, but the pulls of love, lust, careers, and a pair of well-turned stilettos are still the focus of this Fab Four. As the women gamely face the prospect of aging--children, menopause, glass ceilings, and, in Carrie's opinion a fate worse than death--domesticity--they still manage to sparkle with the banter and great outfits that made the HBO series and the first film such hits. Sex and the City 2 opens with Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) at the wedding of two of the foursome's favorite gay male friends, Stanford (Willie Garson) and Anthony (Mario Cantone). The wedding itself pulls out all the stops--in the true spirit of Sex and the City--and is one of the highlights of the film. From the no-holds-barred décor, including live swans, to the gay men's chorus singing show tunes while the guests arrive, the event is on the far side of over the top. As the guests settle into their seats, Miranda whispers, "Could this wedding be any gayer?" and as if on command, out comes Liza Minnelli, playing herself, to officiate. (Minnelli's performance is unexpectedly splendid, and her "wedding song" will wow all her fans--gay, straight, married, single.) Yet beneath the luscious glamour and the really bad hats (oh, Carrie, you should have resisted that harlequin feathered crown), the heroines are struggling with the not-so-glamorous realities of their lives. Charlotte and Harry (the always delightful and dependable Evan Handler) have two demanding young daughters--and a nanny from Ireland whose braless voluptuousness puts new meaning in the phrase "Irish spring," and who may be threatening their marriage. Miranda, ever the focused career gal, is getting nowhere fast at her law firm. And Carrie, now married to Mr. Big (Chris Noth), is chafing at the cozy staying-in and lying-low that she thinks spell death to romance. (It should be noted that vixen Samantha is still game for walking on the wild side. At the wedding she meets a handsome straight guy and asks him what he does for a living. "I lay concrete," he says. Samantha: "That sounds promising.") And for once there are no easy, glib answers to the real-life problem of the four stars, and Sex and the City 2 lets the characters actually grow up, at least a little. Which doesn't mean their fashions aren't fabulous. The film is also chock-a-block with great cameos, including Miley Cyrus, Project Runway's Tim Gunn, and Penélope Cruz. And longtime fans of the TV series will be happy to hear that Smith Jerrod (Jason Lewis), Samantha's onetime flame, and Aidan (John Corbett), who once stole Carrie's heart, also make appearances.Sex and the City 2 is frothier than a shaken bottle of Champagne, and goes down as smoothly as a couple of appletinis. So fans, drink up! --A.T. Hurley

Flashy and Fun... Watch It!5
Just thought I would write a 5 star review to counteract all of the one and two star reviews. Those people obviously are not true Sex and the City fans. I love Sex and the City and I enjoyed BOTH of the movies. I'm reading reviews mentioning bad acting and no plot. This isn't a Merchant Ivory film or a deep, introspective drama... it is supposed to be a fun, light girl's movie, so lighten up with the movie critic jargon. You guys should be thankful all of the gals agreed to do another movie together rather than complaining about plot lines and wardrobe choices. I actually thought this movie was better than the first one because it had more comedy, more flashy and exotic scenes and more focus on fashion. Someone actually complained the movie wasn't set in New York. Didn't you get enough of New York watching the show? I love New York just as much as the next person, but I enjoyed the change of scenery and some of the footage of Abu Dhabi was breathtaking. I thought this movie tackled some subjects most movies try to ignore such as how taxing motherhood really is. I prefer the honesty about motherhood rather than the movies that always try to make it look like it is the most fun you'll ever have. It seems most of the complainers wanted the movie to have more substance to compensate for the lack of substance in their own lives. So, don't listen to them... go see it for yourself and enjoy it for what it is - a light movie to remind us all how fun life can really be (especially when you're on vacation).

Alice in Wonderland (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (2010)

BUY Alice in Wonderland by AMAZON!
In spite of having to read many negative reviews, I was still curious to see this movie. I not a huge Burton fan neither, although I've enjoyed some of his previous work. But it was something about «Alice in Wonderland» which seemed appealing; its visual look and its quirky characters. Still I had in mind the several hostile reviews, which accused this movie to be a flat, soulless and muddled attempt of a classic, which I also feared it would. But after finally seeing the movie, I can claim my disagreement with the reviewers. In fact, I'm not sure if we even saw the same movie. What exactly was so terrible about it?

Overall, I found «Alice in Wonderland» to be very entertaining. I feared that the movie would lose some of it's magic as the main character entered to Wonderland, but fortunately it never did. I enjoyed the movie from the very start to its very end. It's a cute fantasy/adventure movie, equal to the «Harry Potter» and the «Narnia» flicks (although I personally felt «Prince Caspain» had some slight weaknesses). But beware; there are some frightening creatures that may scare the youngest in the audience, so the PG rating is suitable.

One of the films biggest advantages is it visuals. With it lush and dark landscapes, cute animals and colorful costumes, the flick is beautifully to look at and I can't wait to enjoy the sharpness of the picture on Blu Ray. The score of Danny Elfman is effective and gives the movie a dreamy, atmospheric tone. The characters are mostly passable. They don't steal the show entirely, but neither do they appear as distractive or annoying.

Although I've always liked the original novel of Lewis Carroll, I must say that I found this new twist of the story fresh and creative, depicting the «wrong» Alice's adventures in Wonderland as a young adult. Linda Woolverton, who's behind the excellent screenplays for «Beauty and the Beast», «The Lion King» and «Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey», has written a solid and decent script to «Wonderland». Many have claimed this screenplay to be muddled and confusing, but I didn't felt it that way at all. Once again, did we even saw the same movie?

Mia Wasikowska is quite decent as Alice. Although she doesn't have a distinctive emanation/charisma who characterizes other young actresses at her age, she's still delivers a nice and acceptable performance. Personally I felt her screen presence expanded during the movie. Johnny Depp is indeed a good actor. To claim anything else, would be a like claiming that the climate isn't humid in the rain forest. Although I've never been crazy over Depp's work, he's goofy and great as The Mad Hatter, which is indeed the best character in the movie. Helena Bonham Carter is also believable and funny as the Red Queen (just prepare yourself to hear «Off with his head» at least a hundred times during the movie, ha ha). While Anne Hathaway, on the other hand, is warm and passable as the White Queen (although I must confess it was a little distracting to see her with a blonde wig and with a British accent).

In fact, I can't see anything wrong with this new Burton version of «Wonderland». I truly enjoyed it and recommend it to everyone as possible. It didn't deserve the negative criticism at all, in my opinion. With quality films like this, perhaps I could finally forgive Disney for its recent mistakes? (*Cough, leaving hand drawn animation behind and promoting teen stars as crazy, cough*)

So follow every white rabbit you see and follow him to the hole... Wonderland is waiting...

The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Third Season

In the cult tradition of SPARTACUS, the halls of every science department now echoes: "I AM SHELDON"!

BUY The Big Bang Theory BY AMAZON
Well into its third season, THE BIG BANG THEORY proved to be one of the most funny TV sitcoms ever aired. I had not laughed out loud this hard ever since the best days of FRASIER and SEINFELD - and BIG BANG is consistently brilliant!

Sheldon Cooper is unavoidably the king of the show - the massive black hole this Universe revolves around if you will. A child prodigy, now a 24 years old theoretical physicist PhD with absolutely no social skills or known sexual drive. Sheldon may be on the verge of unifying the fields but cannot drive a car to save his life or break a smile even remotely resembling that of a mere homo sapiens.
Best SEASON 3 moment (a very hard choice to make): attempting to condition Penny using positive reinforcement (chocolates) - but was also open to "mild electric-shocks with almost imperceptible tissue damage" to have her ready by dinner-time.

Leonard Hofstadter is Sheldon's roommate and primary ...keeper. An experimental physicist himself, he juggles Sheldon's idiosyncrasies with his personal neurosis - not to mention his crush on his neighbor Penny.
Best SEASON 3 moment: getting high on hash-cookies while on an asteroid-gazing camp-trip and rambling that he 'd rather have a different name as Leonard sounds like having "nerd" in it.

Howard Wolowitz is the only one with no PhD yet (and Sheldon never lets him forget it). An electrical engineer whose crowning achievement is a mechanized arm that is used in the space shuttle (and is now working on its liquid waste management solutions). The fact that he is a short man with a severely outdated and misguided sense of fashion, still lives with his mother, insists on using a collection of pickup lines straight from men's magazines advice columns - and yet carries himself as God's gift to women is just hilarious.
Best SEASON 3 moment: turning into Gothowitz by use of fake tattoo-sleeves to pick up "easy morbid Goth girls".

Rajesh Koothrappali is a particle astrophysicist with a fashion sense close to absolute zero and a severe case of shyness - to the point that he cannot speak in front of women unless inebriated. He keeps using the "poor Indian" defense although his father is a rich doctor who drives a Bentley.
Best SEASON 3 moment: wearing a T-shirt with a small speaker and a large selection of sound-effects, he uses it brilliantly to dramatize his answers. HOWARD: "But Sheldon, you ARE guilty". RAJEH: "[playing the Law & Order Doom-DOOM]!"

Finally, Penny. She is the proverbial good girl next door who came to California with stardom aspirations but so far works as waitress and suffers a sequence of bad boyfriends - and from her neighbors.
Best SEASON 3 moment: waiting at the hospital with Sheldon taking her medical history. "Migraines?" "Well, I'm getting one now!"

The show unavoidably makes use of previous sitcom combinations (the odd couple, the unfulfilled love-interest mismatch) but even if one manages to discern them they are used in such a fresh manner that all that is left is great entertainment!

The way to truly enjoy this is to own it on DVD. The writing is so smart and the jokes fly so fast (many of them non-verbal) there is just no way to savor it during its weekly air time. Well, may be Sheldon could but then again, who can compare his intellect with his?

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Product Description

From Emmy® nominees Chuck Lorre (Two and a Half MenDharma & GregCybill,Grace Under Fire) & Bill Prady (Dharma & Greg) comes The Big Bang Theory. Leonard (Galecki) and Sheldon (Parsons) are brilliant physicists, the kind of "beautiful minds" that understand how the universe works. But none of that genius helps them interact with people – especially women. All this changes when a free-spirited beauty named Penny (Cuoco) moves in next door. Sheldon, Leonard's roommate, is quite content spending his nights playing Klingon Boggle with their socially dysfunctional friends, fellow Caltech scientists Howard Wolowitz (Helberg) and Rajesh Koothrappali (Nayyar). Leonard, however, sees in Penny a whole new universe of possibilities ... including love.

The Back-Up Plan

We first meet Zoe with her feet up in the stirrups at her gynecologist's office. At first I assumed this was just a regular check up, but she's being artificially inseminated in the very first scene of the movie. (This is one of the problems in the movie, but more on that in a bit.) We hear her thoughts about what she is doing and flashback to her friend, Mona, trying to talk her out of it, and her other friend, Clive, refusing to be the donor. She wants a baby and there isn't any potential husbands on the horizon, so she's going to be artificially inseminated. It's that simple.

She's given up finding "the one" and so she undergoes her first treatment, but wouldn't you know it, she almost immediately meets a man, Stan. They meet in a typically sitcom fashion (there's a disagreement over a cab) and there's instant chemistry, at least the script seems to think so.
They go out on a date, but she's worried about telling him about undergoing artificial insemination. At first she puts it off, because it is unlikely she got pregnant the first time. Turns out she did get pregnant, so she has to tell him. He freaks out a bit. They deal with it. They find out that not only is she pregnant, she's pregnant with twins. It's really panic time now. They get over it. Something else comes up. More panic. Etc., etc., etc.

That's enough of the plot. Quite frankly, it's a romantic comedy and anyone who has seen more than two examples of the genre will probably be able to guess the general story arc. Like I said, predictability is common in the genre and I'm not going to hold it against the movie. What I am going to hold against the movie is the lack of chemistry between the two leads. I never once believed their romance. Maybe that's because the film is written like a second-rate sitcom, the kind of sitcom that gives other sitcoms a bad name. It's always going for the easy laugh and no joke is too old to be repeated in this movie. (Did you know pregnant women having cravings for weird foods?) These are not real people we get to know and understand on some emotional level. They are simply caricatures who are there to float along with the plot, and deliver tired, cliché riddled jokes. There are entire scenes without a single joke that works. Worse yet, there are scenes without a single joke that's even recognizable as a joke.

The film is also hurt by a very, very weak start. The credits last about two minutes. We then see Zoe in the stirrups right away, the voiceover / flashbacks happen, and by the seven-minute mark, she's met Stan. Seven minutes into the movie, and we have all of the plot we are going to get. For the next 90 minutes they are just going through the paces.

Not everything is a write-off. Jennifer Lopez does have screen presence and in the right movie, she has what it takes to be a star. Of course, it has been a while since she's been in a movie like that. (I liked her in Shall We Dance?, but that came out more than five years ago.) She really needs to choose better roles than this.

Date Night

This movie had an excellent cast, and Carrel with Fey paired together was amazing. There were a few stars I didn't even know were in the film, particularly Ray Liotta.

I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews on this movie. I'm particularly a tough critic for movies, so I guess you either get the jokes or you don't and none of them had the intelligence level to get the jokes or maybe they were too serious to enjoy this movie and it's humor. I was rolling through the whole movie, especially during the credits with the extra scenes and gaffs.

Tina Fey and Steve Carrel's characters I think are something we can all relate to, being married and feeling like things are just going stale, or worrying that maybe your relationship isn't up to par with your friends and co-workers' relationships.

Hilarious movie, definitely worth seeing and definitely FIVE stars!

Amazon.com
Tina Fey and Steve Carell are two of the most charming performers in entertainment today. Their goofy attractiveness makes them a perfect couple in Date Night: an unremarkable husband and wife from New Jersey, they get mistaken for crooks in Manhattan, sending them on a wild night replete with snooty wait staff, crooked cops, glitter-specked strippers, a shirtless superspy (Mark Wahlberg, as buff as ever), and a preposterous car chase. The movie makes no effort to be remotely plausible and the last third really goes off the rails, and it would probably be better served by less familiar faces in minor roles (bit parts are played by Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Wiig, Common, James Franco, Mila Kunis, William Fichtner, and Ray Liotta). It's disappointing that the dialogue doesn't crackle the way it does on 30 Rock or The Office. But Fey and Carell carry the movie along through sheer nerdy pluck. Rarely does a couple in a movie seem genuinely devoted to each other, not out of wild passion, but for all the things that a real marriage is built on: patience, shared humor, a willingness to deal with day-to-day annoyances, and simple affection. Fey and Carell seem like a couple you'd actually enjoy going out to dinner with. In today's world, that's more romantic than sunsets and bouquets of roses. --Bret Fetzer

Amazon.com
In the bouncy romantic comedy The Bounty Hunter, Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler aim to be a contemporary Nick and Nora for an audience that's never even heard of The Thin Man. Ex-cop-turned-bounty hunter Milo Boyd (Butler, 300) is ecstatic when he gets his new assignment: his ex-wife, reporter Nicole Hurley (Aniston), has skipped bail to pursue a breaking story. Naturally, when he catches her, he also gets caught up in the mystery--though the mystery is really just an excuse for quirky comic bickering between the estranged lovebirds. Refreshingly, the script has the kind of off-beat rhythms and flavors of comedy-action flicks like Midnight RunOut of Sight, andSomething Wild, and the supporting cast (featuring Christine Baranski, Mamma Mia!; Peter Greene, Pulp Fiction; Jeff Garlin, Curb Your Enthusiasm; Siobhan Fallon,Saturday Night Live; Cathy Moriarty, Raging Bull; and beloved character actress Carol Kane) is a colorful collection of great faces and pungent personalities. It's unfortunate that the leads are a tad bland; Aniston and Butler aren't bad, but they don't have the snap, crackle, and pop that the movie craves. Nonetheless, The Bounty Hunter rises above the average Hollywood rom-com. --Bret Fetzer

Comedy & Criminals3
Very entertaining, very enjoyable, I would say this was a strong 3 star. Gerard Butler (Milo) is a former NYPD cop, who left the job to become a Bounty Hunter. Jennifer Anniston (Nicole) is a newspaper reporter who is currently on $50,000 bail for assaulting a mounted police officer, or his horse. And BTW, they were married about 3 years ago, and divorced after about 9 months. While the movie begins in NYC and is tied to NY, much of the movie takes place on the Atlantic City Boardwalk and around the casinos.

Nicole is investigating a story about a suicide that sounds fishy. She arrives at court with 4 minutes to spare. When she gets a call from a snitch, she stupidly runs off instead of going to court. The judge orders a bench warrant for her and she becomes a fugitive. The bail bondsman offers Milo $5,000 to go get her. Because there is plenty of leftover passionate anger between the couple, Milo is only too happy to go after her--besides, he needs the money. His $11,000 gambling debt is overdue and, well, they break your legs for stuff like that.

Meanwhile, the bad guys don't like Nicole investigating the so-called suicide, so they come after her. Through Milo chasing Nicole and the bad guys chasing both of them, there is also a wanna-be love interest following Nicole because she made out with him one night while she was blitzed at a party.

I like both these actors and it was good to see them do a movie together. It's a wild and crazy story. It's cute and funny, and yes, I would watch it again.

Three for the movie, four for Jennifer Anston but BAD GIRL!4
I only got this movie because it featured Jennifer Aniston, and I am so annoyed at how crummy the movie is that I almost made it a three. News flash for Jennifer Anston: you're a brand now, do NOT sign up for low-rent plots.

This was so annoying I ended up flipping NEXT on the controller several times, it is just not the high quality film one would expect with Jennifer Aniston who is all grown up and no longer should be playing the fool.

Movies featuring her that I have really liked very much:
Rumor Has It... (Widescreen Edition)
Along Came Polly (Widescreen Edition)

Shees. Going through 36 sheets of links I am reminded of how many second-rate movies she has been in since starring in friends. Perhaps its time she changed agents and went totally up-scale. Please, no more stupid movies.

The Bounty Hunter5
The movie moved along quickly with humor and held my attenton. I thought the chemistry between Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston added to the fun of the movie. I don't remember seeing Jennifer doing action scenes as she did in this movie. Gerry always delivers his roles and did a great job as Milo. I'd go see it again in a heartbeat.
